The Ninth Legion Hispana (Legio IX Hispana) came to Britannia in 43AD. It was brought here by Aulus Plautius with three other legions- XX, II, XIIII plus around 20,000 auxiliary troops, attached to each legion in formations of around 5000 men in a mixture of light infantry and cavalry. So a total legionary compliment in full battle order would number 10,000 soldiers. We have recreated the Ninth Legion, at the time of its settlement in (Lincoln) Lindum Colonia around 60AD. It was commanded by Petilius Cerealis, possibly having as his Second- in- Command, one Gnaeus Julius Agricola, a young Senatorial Tribunus laticlavius, future governor of Britannia and Father in Law to Tacitus the Roman historian.

In 61AD Queen Boudicca of the Icenian tribe rebelled and the Ninth, or a large section of it, were marched south to Stamford where they were met and defeated by a British host twenty times the size of the legion. The Legion disappears from the Senatorial records in Rome around 165AD when it might have been destroyed by the Parthians. A legend dating back many years, possibly to the time of the Roman Occupation 43AD to 410AD (500AD), tells of the loss of a Legion beyond Hadrian's Wall around 130AD. It may have been the Ninth that seems to have disappeared for a while.

It reappears in Holland around this date and stamped tiles and bricks bearing the Ninth's logo have been found at Nimegen in Holland. Some scholars think 'Nimegen', is a corruption of 'Nonae legion' but this cannot be substantiated. Rosemary Suttcliffe imortalised the legend of the Ninth in a children's book and a TV series 'Eagle of The Ninth. Two blockbuster films are coming out next year 2010.
